What you need to remember 1/ Seasonal Summer Recurrent Dermatisis is an allergy caused by cullicoides bites. It is not contagious and it is the result of a lackness of the horse immune system. 2/ If a horse is allergic, it will be allergic the rest of its life 3/ The midges responsible of the allergy are everywhere but two elements keeps them away :
- the wind which avoid them to fly
- the cold (under 12°c) : that's the reason why the SSRD doesn't exist during winter. If your horse has rashes under 12°c, consult your veterinary 4/ somes places are the nest of those midges :
- near a forest
- near humid zones Careful : hitching tale and mane is not always the symptoms of a SSRD. Other allergies can be the cause, such as food allergy, acarian allergy.... Consult you veterinary. Sweating is also a cause of hitching. Give a shower to your your horse after riding or if it's wearing a coverage
